In The Hobbit: There and Back Again, a competitive dice drafting game by Reiner Knizia for Office Dog, every player has a thick adventure book with wipe-clean pages, and everyone opens it at the same chapter. A round starts with a roll of the shared dice; in turn order each player picks one, using it to draw paths across their map, collect resources or take an action that brings them closer to the chapter's goal. The shortest player goes first.
The book follows Bilbo and the Dwarves through eight famous episodes of the story between Bag End and the Lonely Mountain, facing Trolls, Goblins, giant spiders, Wargs and finally Smaug. Each chapter uses the dice and resources in its own way, so the rules keep shifting as the journey goes on.
From one to four players aged ten and up, each game takes about thirty minutes, and solo play suits a lone burglar.
